Raised in 1843 as a Hudson’s Bay Company exchanging post on a site initially called Camosun (the local word was “camosack”, signifying “surge of water”) referred to quickly as “Fortification Albert”, the settlement was renamed Fort Victoria in November 1843, to pay tribute to Queen Victoria. … Victoria was fused as a city in 1862.
